The ULTRARAM™ memory technology, developed at Lancaster University and commercialised through spin-out Quinas Technology, has been named a winner of the 2025 WIPO Global Awards in the ICT Start-Up category. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) selected Quinas as the UK’s first recipient of this international award, highlighting the global significance of the breakthrough.
Selected from over 780 entries across 95 countries, ULTRARAM™ stood out for its innovative approach to memory storage. By combining the speed of DRAM, the non-volatility of flash, and remarkably low energy consumption, it addresses long-standing limitations in computing memory technology. Its operation is based on quantum-mechanical resonant tunnelling within compound semiconductors, a feature that enables high-performance, energy-efficient data retention.
WIPO praised the project for its effective integration of intellectual property into its commercial strategy. Quinas holds five granted patents in four countries and another eight pending. This strong intellectual property portfolio underpins its capacity to scale ULTRARAM™ development and to collaborate effectively across research and industry. WIPO will support Quinas through mentoring, promotional opportunities, and access to international IP networks.
According to Lancaster University, Professor Manus Hayne mentioned that “Quinas Technology is truly delighted and honoured to be a winner in the WIPO Global Awards 2025. Innovation and intellectual property are inseparable aspects at the heart of Quina’s approach to the commercialisation of ULTRARAM™, and to have this recognition by the World Intellectual Property Office is a huge milestone in our journey. With the use of quantum resonant tunnelling as the key inventive step behind ULTRARAM™, it is particularly fitting in the UN International Year of Quantum. The award represents international recognition of the insight, creativity and hard work from colleagues at Quinas and in the Physics Department and the commercialisation team at Lancaster University. I would also like to thank our legal partners for their invaluable assistance in drafting and securing ULTRARAM™ patents and for supporting the award nomination.”
