Mark Casali is currently head of the Technology Development Programme at the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The programme consists of around 10 projects which seek to develop key astronomical technologies for the future. Previously his focus has always been on instrumentation. He was manager of the instrumentation programme for the extremely large telescope (ELT), a new facility currently under construction in Chile. He was Head of the instrumentation division at ESO before that.
He has also previously worked at the UK Astronomy Technology centre in Edinburgh, where he was a project scientist on various projects both on ground and in space. He also spent 5 years in Hawaii working at the UK observatories on Mauna Kea. He has a bachelor (honours) degree and PhD in Physics from the University of Melbourne in Australia.
